Inspired by the titular sci-fi movie series, this four-against-one online-only hunting game is decidedly more fun when you're the hunter and not the hunted. The sound design in that regard makes for an immersive experience. The sound effects are ace. All of which results in large amounts of blood, gore, and dismemberment. And there's a lot of foliage. Here, the Predator somehow kills maybe one person before being cornered and taken down, and then teabagged by players with Spider-Man avatars. Like everyone else has said, Online only. And yet, I reckon, this is a game that's going to get caught in its own self-destruct blast. Playing it? Please don't waste your money on this. When all of the elements of the hunt come together, high-action moments are created and the appealing core idea of Hunting Grounds shines through. I hope the developer addresses the queue times and also supports dlc to expand the game. Honestly though, despite unique passive abilities per class, I didn't find much of a difference between them, aside from maybe health. It's that forgettable. You need to buy a $49.95 a month subscription and when PS4 showed the original preview, they did not mention this nor even hinted it was part of their subscription games! When playing as the Predator, players use laser guns and blades to kill human soldiers, while playing as a soldier gives you guns to use against the Predator. Suggest an update to this review. See something that needs to be addressed? This game is an ONLINE game ONLY!! The Predator itself is the highlight, unsurprisingly, stealing the show regardless of the side you're playing on. There's a problem loading this menu right now. But the fuzzy feelings of "ah, just like OG Predator" fade away when I'm playing the actual game, which is a bit of a mess right now. Don't miss: Some heat vision and tactical cloaking doesn't exactly even the battlefield. Heat vision only picks up enemies in the close- to middle-distance, so the start of most rounds as the Pred feels like a deliberately hands-off stealth game where you're forced to track your play using actual intuition, instead of following arrows on the UI. Predator: Hunting Grounds Review: If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It. Let’s be honest. You can still see all customer reviews for the product. We display the minimum age for which content is developmentally appropriate. The company did not see the contents of the review before publishing. Picture that, but there's no stealth skill here to speak of, just incompetent AI. There are loot boxes, of course, which you're showered with after every round. You'll almost always lose your match. The Predator is the sneakiest of big movie monsters, and he always has a high body count. You have climbing skills that rival an Assassin's Creed hero. Predator: Hunting Grounds is a mess. The Predator's movement through the trees while cloaked - when you do manage to get a shimmery glimpse - is nicely done for instance. You can cover yourself in mud to hide from its heat vision, which is simple and silly but something I absolutely love, because that's what 80s movies are all about. Maybe if you ever find it on sale for $10 or something, but definitely not worth $40. Hard to track, hard to hit, weirdly euphoric when you clip it and manage to spill some of that iconic green blood, and terrifying when it roars after healing. It's ridicules and immoral. The blood for the predator is green and the human blood is fine. There's fleeting enjoyment to be had if you can team up with your friends, but it remains unbalanced, unpolished, and lacks the soul worthy of the franchise name. Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2020. The progression, for better or worse, moves fast. I suggest others do the same to send PlayStation a message that we will not shell out even more money than we already have! It's just shame that the feeling of dread this evokes is few and far between. When you play Predator: Hunting Grounds as one of the soldiers, your survival depends on your ability to work together, but do you think this is true for real life as well? That generally stands for any multiplayer title, but even more with Predator: Hunting Grounds. Moments like these, teasing out recognisable nods to the films, suggest Predator: Hunting Grounds needn't be that bad at all. The game contains violence blood and gore.you have two options to play as Fireteam or Predator. When playing as fireteam you hve 3 other people with you have to... Arnold vs. alien action is violent, ultra macho. The rough overall performance of the game hinders everything considerably. Seriously: mud as a thermal detection cloak is a really nice touch! Be prepared that if you want the play as the Predator, you're looking at matchmaking times upwards of seven or more minutes. So, my team just ran in circles waiting for the Predator to find us so we could just do battle with them, and then emerged the victor. Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, In-Game Purchases, Users Interact. It's such a shame, then, that when the Pred does make the leap to what should be its home world of video games, what we get is yet another naff, underbaked and dated effort like Predator: Hunting Grounds. The shooting's forgettable. Out of all of the matches I played, the Predator only ever won once. When playing as one of four humans who must work together, the game works like a first-person shooter in which you're a special ops soldier who must complete military missions in a South American jungle while being hunted by the Predator. The graphics looked REALLY COOL when playing the demo on a traveling PS4 truck, so I preordered it. And that time the Predator won? Prime members enjoy FREE Delivery and exclusive access to music, movies, TV shows, original audio series, and Kindle books. These missions exist as a simple reason for you to be in the jungle with the Predator hunting you. I usually dont agree with CSM but this time they underrated it. But like other recent attempts to resurrect the near-unkillable alien, maybe the creature was better left in the jungle. Bloody online-only combat shines when playing alien hunter. Is it technically playable? Its sole game mode - asymmetrical multiplayer, pitching one player as the Predator against several others as semi-defenseless grunts - has a premise that's decent enough, but is just lacking in execution. This site © 2020 Gamer Network Limited. The Predator is certainly harder to kill because it has a lot more health and is far more agile, but it also isn't a match for four other players. There's not much else to say here other than it's at least playable. It's not going to blow you away, but if you have some decent hardware, it'll look far cleaner and nicer than the console versions, not to mention the vastly increased frame rate providing a smooth experience. Playing as a soldier, which is in first-person compared to the Predator's third-person, is fine, but the shooting really feels so-so at best when compared to other modern first-person shooters. The soldiers who do well are the ones who work together and don't just go it alone, ignoring their teammates. Review by Chris Tapsell, Staff Writer Updated on 28 April 2020.
